For example, being slapped by a co-worker? Being instructed by a supervisor to practice illegal discrimination in hiring? Reverse-discrimination? (--- Yeah, all of the above, even. I've been given the option of mediation by my state labor board, or they can continue with an investigation themselves: my choice. I don't want to be greedy or naive, and the former employer needs to learn some lessons, or they won't change their behavior.)Does anyone know what kinds of settlements are common (by precedent) in cases involving civil rights?
Civil rights cases involve government action, not private action. Settlements are generally designed to make people whole -- to compensate them for their loss. If you had a civil suit for being slapped and instructed to show a preference for a certain race, you could expect a jury to award you about a buck and a half.
