Hi
The Plessy vs Ferguson (1896) court decision produced the ';separate but equal'; phrase under racial segregation especially on transport and other public facilities such as drinking fountains and cafes.
This helped the African American cause because they were allowed to use the same facilities as whites such as accommodation without being restricted entirely like they were under the Jim Crow Laws passed after Reconstruction. This was a major advancement for them. Also the Plessy vs Ferguson decision layed a foundation for a further advancement in the African American cause through another supreme court decision 58 years later (Brown vs Board of Education) which allowed African Americans equal educational rights as whites.
The only way the Plessy vs Ferguson decision hurt the African American cause was increased violence and hostility from whites who couldnt stand to have African Americans having the same rights as them.
Hope that helped.
Rembrandt.
