What can I do if someone has personal information/photos of me & threatens to release it? Is that a civil case?

blackmail is not cool, its criminal and you can probably also sue. Call your local police department and they will know how to best help you. I linked the wiki of blackmail because its gonna be slightly different depending on where you live. What can I do if someone has personal information/photos of me %26amp; threatens to release it? Depends.

Under some circumstances that could be blackmail or extortion, which is a crime. However, if the photoes were legally taken then he owns the copyright to them and can publish them if he chooses.

Likewise, 'most' personal information is not protected by law, and as long as he came by it legally he can pass it on to anyone he wants.

They are feeling inferior to you and more than likely they could never use any collected pictures or other forms of exploitation to build a case against you....it sounds like the person is desperate to harm you and has to resort to decite.
Depends on how the pictures were acquired. If you agreed to be pictured doing the big nasty and now you've changed your mind, well too bad. If the pictures were taken without your knowledge you can sue.
Sounds like black mail to me...that is a criminal case. If you don't mind the authorities knowing the information you are being black mailed on. You should get it reported to the police and let them handle it.
You can make a civil case if they actually release it and you can prove that they damaged your reputation, you can sue for defamation.
How did they get this information and photos? If you gave it freely or they took the pictures while you were in public, they own it.
