Are there two types of depositions in civil cases?

I live in Virginia. Are there 2 types of depositions, one for discovery and the other to only establish the facts in a civil case? If one is only to preserve the facts, can any other type of questions be asked and can the two types be combined? Are there two types of depositions in civil cases?
No there is only one type of deposition, but a deposition can be used for two purposes. You have the facts correct. Depositions can be used to discover the facts of a case or to ';tie down'; the position of the other party. You can ask almost anything in a deposition if it is likely to lead to discoverable evidence. The major exception is that you cannot ask any question that is a privileged communication, such as a conversation between a lawyer and client. Actually, you can ask anything, but the other party can decline to answer questions that are privileged. Privilege means a communication that is recognized as confidential by the rules of evidence in your state. Are there two types of depositions in civil cases?
they only use 1 deposition for the case
