In civil cases what are the pros and cons of a jury?

juries tend to side with the victim and award outrageous sums of money. Those extremely high awards means the other side has grounds for an appeal. If juries would be realistic in the dollar amounts cases would be settled sooner and the injured party have his/her money in hand.
