How does the civil cases work?

The case involving sexual harassment that was done by isaih thomas resulted in a 10 million awardment yet they are civil cases that I have known that have resulted in more than 1 million even homicide or attempted homicide cases in which the victim is physically disabled for life?How does the civil cases work?
